Joanne Roberts is a Winnipeg-based filmmaker, producer, writer and former broadcast journalist whose work moves between documentary, narrative filmmaking, and short-form visual storytelling.
Her background in journalism shaped an approach built around curiosity, and finding the story underneath the obvious one. Today, she carries projects from first idea through production and final delivery — developing concepts, directing, filming, interviewing, scripting, hosting and making final editorial decisions.
Whether she is directing a film, building a visual campaign or documenting someone at work, Joanne approaches storytelling as both a creative and practical discipline: make something beautiful, but make sure it has something to say.

The studio is an independent filmmaking and production practice led by Joanne Roberts.
Projects range from photography and short-form video to documentary, artist and community stories, content production and larger creative campaigns. Some productions are deliberately small and nimble, with Joanne working directly behind the camera. Others require a larger crew.
For those projects, the studio scales around the work — bringing together producers, camera operators and other trusted production collaborators based on what the story actually needs.
That structure keeps the work flexible without losing creative continuity. Joanne remains closely involved in the story and visual direction, while additional production and camera support allows the studio to take on more ambitious shoots, multiple-camera productions and projects with greater logistical needs.
The goal is not to make every project bigger. It is to build the right production around the story.
